Dead grass or thatch is like cotton. If you are watering 20-30 minutes per day its likely that 80% or more of that water is being absorbed by dead grass. If you are spreading / spraying a fertilizer it's likely 80% of that nutrients is being absorbed by the dead grass. If your lawn is in a healthy state we recommend that you power rake and aerate at minimum once annually to keep the lawn healthy and soil soft. Lawns are living organisms and need lots of water, air and breathing room to grow.
The best way to make this happen is to aerate and or power rake your lawn. We do bag and haul off the dead thatch after we power rake the yard, we use core aeration that leaves the soil plugs on the yard (these plugs carry nutrients in them and act as an organic fertilizer, so
we recommend letting these break down and fall back into the yard.
